The second unit is underway for the St. John Nepomucene PSR class.  This unit over the morality of human actions composes the bulk of our class.  We will look at law and truth, learning who ultimately decides good and evil and what that good and evil is. The 10 Commandments and Jesus’ law of love show us what is good and tell us what is bad.  There are also the moral principles that must be taken into consideration when deciding how to act.  We will look at conscience:  What it is and what role it plays in our daily lives.  We will finish this unit with a discussion on sin, looking at the types and what we can do to battle it.  Along the way we will talk some more on Mary and the Saints and of course the various Sacraments that our students are preparing for.  I am very pleased with how this year is progressing which is in thanks for the most part to such wonderful young people that we have in our class!  May the Lord continue to bless us.

Update on Class

St. John Nepomucene’s class delved into Christian Morality on Sunday, Sept. 27 with a discussion on the nature and dignity of man.  Every human has two components, a body and a soul, the seen and unseen.  Just as the body has parts, so does the soul.  These faculties include the intellect, our capacity to learn, and our free will, our capacity to choose.  The free will is our greatest faculty because with it we can choose God or not choose Him; we can love Him or not love Him. Love lies in our free will, not in our emotions.

Our class also learned about three aspects of man, the fact that we are created, fallen, and redeemed.  First, God created man, then man, through the first sin of Adam, rejected God.  This first sin is the reason why all subsequent men are born with original sin.  This sin made it impossible for man to have a relationship with God.  However, God in His great love refused to let this be the end.  He crossed the great chasm of sin by sending Jesus, his Son, to be our Savior.  By Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, man’s relationship with God has been restored.

This fact that God has redeemed us after we rejected Him is proof of his great love for us and has elevated us to a great place of honor.  This love gives us dignity and this dignity is the basis of the Catholic stance on the life issues such as abortion and euthanasia.  Additionally, all Catholic are called to respond to the Lord’s initiative in protection these human rights for all.
