Online Tour of the Escavations Under St. Peters Basilica (St. Peter's Tomb)

It was believed for centuries that the Basilica of St. Peter's was built over the tomb of St. Peter himself, but no one really knew for sure.  Then while excavating under a site for a future heavy monument in the crypt (to test the ground support) engineers discovered a huge necropolis (above ground mausoleum style cemetery) upon which the church was built.  After years of excavation they discovered one simple grave around which many others were crowded - as if they all wished to be buried close to it.  Directly under the main altar it was the tomb of St. peter.   The Vatican has now released its discoveries and offers an online virtual tor of the excavation narrated by a Monsignor.  Its a pilgrimage with out the cost of air travel!  Click here to take a fascinating tour of the excavation.
